Apple has today announced macOS Sierra, the successor to OS X 10.11, which comes with a focus on Continuity, iCloud, and “the fundamentals of the Mac experience”.

The naming convention change means Apple now has a consistent naming structure across its software platforms: iOS, macOS, tvOS, and watchOS.

macOS Sierra

One of the most significant new features of macOS Sierra is ‘Auto Unlock’, which allows you to remotely unlock your Mac using an Apple Watch.

macOS also has a new feature called ‘Universal Clipboard’ that enhances traditional copy and paste functionality, by enabling users to automatically copy text, photos, and more from an iPhone, and paste them on a Mac.

Other new features coming to the Mac operating system include Siri integration, an iCloud Drive update that makes files on your Mac available across multiple devices, tabs for multi-window apps (built-in and third-party), and Picture-in-Picture, which works in full screen.

macOS Sierra is available to developers today. A public beta will be launched in July and a public release is coming in the fall.
