One of the OnePlus 5T‘s more nifty features is its Face Unlock, which lets you bypass the lock screen by just pointing the phone at your mug and pressing the power button. Thankfully for OnePlus 5 owners, the latest Android 8.0 Oreo beta looks to include the feature for their devices as well.
Based on the screenshot below, OnePlus 5’s Face Unlock looks to behave in the same was as the OnePlus 5T’s implementation — you can either add face data during setup or within settings if you choose to add the data later. Once Face Unlock is enabled, you can choose to unlock the OnePlus 5 with your face as soon as the screen turns on without swiping first.
One of the knocks against Face Unlock is that it is unreliable in low-light scenarios — there is no special hardware at work, since it relies entirely on software. It’s also because of Face Unlock’s dependence on software that OnePlus warns that it is less secure than the fingerprint sensor, though in our testing, we have yet to fool Face Unlock with a picture of ourselves.
It also needs to be said that Face Unlock has worked much faster than many of the other devices we’ve tested, and at least it isn’t the only security option available. I’m looking at you, iPhone X.

While we’re on the subject of the OnePlus 5’s Android Oreo beta, the new software changes up the look of Settings and the notification panel. You’ll also find your standard Android Oreo features present and accounted for, such as picture-in-picture, autofill, and pop-up menus when you press and hold an app icon.
