If you’re not fast, you don’t last. That more true today than it’s ever been. A big part of IT’s job these days is to get new applications and services into the hands of customers faster than the competition can. But IT departments struggle to provide the kind of flexible, easy-access resources that are needed for rapid delivery of the new breed of apps that leverage big data, social, cloud-native and mobile technologies. It’s tough to carve out resources for those, while at the same time ensuring that business-critical traditional IT keeps running smoothly, with all the predictability that the business expects.

Many companies have turned to infrastructure-as-a-service to help them get faster and lighter on their feet. No question, that’s a good option for some projects, such as developing cloud-native apps. But workloads that process sensitive or confidential data – a customer’s credit card information, for example – raise security and compliance issues that make many organizations hesitate to rely too heavily on public cloud. What businesses are looking for is on-premises infrastructure that can deliver cloud-like speed and convenience without the cloud headaches.
