Gifs have quickly become one of the most popular ways for people to express themselves. That’s because it requires less time to view than a video, but it’s also more expressive than a photo. You can find them all over social media and the Internet in general. Some of them are pretty fantastic either. If you’ve ever thought of creating a gif yourself, you have two options. The first is a camera app that turns a short piece of video footage into a gif. The other is a gif creator tool that helps you make them from other stuff. We’ll explore both of these because they are the best gif creator apps on Android. If you find the creation process too tedious or annoying, you can always surf Giphy for some really good gifs!

Footej Camera
[Price: Free / $2.99]
Footej Camera is a newer camera application (released in 2016) that also doubles as a gif creator. Like many camera apps, its features are mainly for photography and include manual controls for your camera (if your hardware supports it), a simple UI, the ability to separate the focal point from the exposure point, and, of course, it can be used as a gif creator. Pair that with the slow motion video recording feature and you have a camera that’s good enough to use in normal situations and when creating gifs.

Gif Creator
[Price: Free / $0.99]
The aptly named Gif Creator allows you to use your camera or existing images on your device to create gifs. It has a fairly basic set of features, including ten filters, animation editing, animation reverting, and more. You’ll be restricted to 30 second gifs which should be more than enough time and you can surf creations made by other people who use the Gif Creator app. The workflow of the app is a bit tedious and there are some issues that have plagued users. At the very least you can try it for free before you buy it.

Gif Maker
[Price: Free]
Gif Maker is a free gif creator app that seems to be slowly growing in popularity. It’s a gif making camera app that allows you to take photos or record video and then warp it into a gif. It features effects that you can add, a continuous shooting mode, and more. It allows for between ten and 50 images if you create a gif that way or between five and 25 seconds of video if you intend on creating a gif that way. You can also make a gif with images already on your device, create collages, and more. Like Gif Creator, there are some issues with the process being tedious along with bugs. Thankfully, this tool is completely free.

Gif Me Camera
[Price: Free / $0.99]
Gif Me Camera is a gif creator camera that is a great option if you need something really simple. It records up to 14 second segments that can be used to create a gif and you can apply a variety of color filters if you want to. If you go pro, you’ll be able to remove the watermark that the app makes. Additional pro features include slow motion video recording, stop motion recroding, time lapse recordings, and more. It’s pretty decent for a gif camera, even if the features are a little on the lighter side.

Gif Pro
[Price: Free]
Gif Pro is one of only a handful of gif creator apps that allows you to actually craft gifs instead of simply re-encoding images or video into gif format. This one allows you to select and re-arrange many photos a once which cuts down on the tedious selection process. It also features an editor screen where you can do some more in-depth kind of stuff. It features effects, frames, stickers, text overlays, and more. You can even adjust output size, how many times the gif loops (supported on certain platforms), animation delays, and quality. Like most, it has its problems and hasn’t been tested by a large audience yet, but it seems to work pretty well.

GIF Studio
[Price: Free]
Gif Studio is another gif creator and editor app that’s worth checking out. It has a variety of more advanced tools, such as extracting images from gifs, the ability to edit a gif using a timeline (like a video editor), and more. On top of that, it has a host of standard features including stickers, text overlays, and the ability to determine size, speed, loops, and a gif camera is built in. Like Gif Pro, this hasn’t been tested on a wide scale, so your mileage may vary, but it’s worth a shot.

PicPic
[Price: Free]
PicPic is a gif community app where you can find and download user-submitted gifs from all over the place. That experience also includes a search feature so you can find the kind of stuff you’re looking for. On top of that, there is a built-in gif camera that allows you to quickly prepare your own gifs. There is a basic editor included that isn’t overly feature rich but it does get the job for those quick jobs. It’s a good mixture of community efforts and gif creation, but those requiring more features may have to look elsewhere.

PicsArt Photo Studio
[Price: Free with in-app purchases]
PicsArt is a photo editor app with an absolute ton of features. You’ll be able to use assets on your device to create your own gifs and you can even create videos if you want to. Pixel Animator: GIF Maker
[Price: Free with in-app purchases]
Pixel Animator is a unique gif creator app because you’ll be making these gifs by hand. By that, we mean you can draw characters and use pixel art to create little gif scenes that you can then share with your audience. Its focus is pixel art, which is does pretty well, and the gif creation is a bit of a side feature. The free version allows you to create a gif with 15 frames while the pro version gives you unlimited frames to work with. The learning curve is a little steep because this is an art app first, but it’s actually kind of fun once you get used to it.

Video2me
[Price: Free / $4.99]
Video2me is a gif creator app that allows you to turn videos, photos, and even other gifs into a gif of your own. It’s technically a video editor app and most of its features revolve around that central premise. As a video app, it’s a tad lackluster, but its ability to merge videos and then turn them into gifs is better than most. You’ll also be able to convert gif to video in case you want it in another format (to merge with other videos, for instance). It hasn’t been tested by a lot of people, so your mileage may vary and we definitely recommending trying out the free version first.
