This private university is big — which means there are just that many more approval processes for everything, says an IT pilot fish there.

“I help support a storage system that is used by researchers at both the university and the affiliated medical center,” fish says.

“Occasionally we need to send out emails to all users of the system via a mailing list. Since these emails go to hundreds of people, the list server requires that the email be approved by one of a handful of designated ‘approvers.’

“And it just so happens that the handful of us who know how to send emails to the list are all the designated approvers.

“Personally, I’ve never turned down myself…”
