This company gets virtually all of its desktop-computer equipment from a local office supply store, reports a pilot fish in the loop.

“And that store’s owner happened to be a friend of the IT director,” fish grumbles.

“The store was well-known for charging well over retail to us. Our management was also keenly aware of this — they saw the invoices — and the IT director’s own staff repeatedly told him the same thing.

“This had been going on for years. When the IT director would tell the store’s owner that the prices were too high, his response was simply that he had to make a profit.

“Apparently our IT department was solely responsible for the office supply store’s profitability.”
