Facebook has launched a new feature on the social network’s official iPhone and iPad app. Called Facebook Sports Stadium, this new feature enables users of the official Facebook app to experience sports in real-time with friends from around the world. Think of it as a live social dedicated area with updated fixture statistics and more – an ideal solution for those who may not be physically located near one another.

Here’s what will be viewable on Facebook Sports:

  • Posts from your friends, and their comments on plays
  • Posts and commentary from experts, like teams, leagues and journalists, with easy access to their Pages
  • Live scores, stats and a play-by-play
  • Game info, like where to find the game on TV

Facebook will enable users of Sports Stadium to follow the action, share individual plays, as well as view most-discussed moments. The social network hopes Sports will become a popular companion experience when watching the broadcast. Facebook notes you’ll be able to access Sports by simply searching for a game.

Initially, the feature will roll out in the U.S. for American football games. Support for other sports like basketball, football (soccer), and more will be introduced in the future. Other platforms will see Facebook Sports Stadium added in the coming weeks.
