Baby Monitor by faebir is a simple baby monitor app in both name and design. The feature set is fairly limited but this app works by turning on the microphone and listening for your baby. When the baby makes enough noise, the app will alert you via a Skype call (great if it’s an old phone that only has WiFi), regular phone call, or it can send you a text message. You can customize things like the microphone sensitivity and you can even use Skype video calls if you prefer. It’s a good, simple option that costs nothing.

BabyMonitor by SmartDyne

We were originally skeptical of BabyMonitor by SmartDyne because the developer hasn’t updated it since 2011. However, we tested it on a Nexus 5 running the latest Android Marshmallow and it the app actually worked perfectly fine. Much like the prior app on this list, this app listens for your child and when it detects noise, it will call you. The interface is old, but usable and the app does work well. This is about as bare minimum as you can get and a good option. The only caveat is that the device you’re using must have a phone signal because regular phone calls are the only option to make this work.

Baby Monitor and Alarm

Baby Monitor and Alarm is among the most popular and highly rated Baby Monitor apps for Android right now. It has a cute interface that emulates an actual baby monitor to help people maintain that familiarity with using an actual baby monitor. On top of the baby monitoring features (it emulates the prior two apps in this regard), you can record your own voice or play locally stored music to attempt to sing the baby back to sleep. It also keeps an activity log so you can see when and how frequently your baby has been making noises. This is a pretty serious baby monitor app for those who want something more than the bare minimum.

Dormi

Dormi is the all-star of the baby monitoring apps world and definitely the most popular. It performs essentially the same functions as every app on this list, but does so without requiring configuration as it should adjust its settings automatically. It keeps logs, can use the camera so you can see what’s going on, and will even have clever ways of alerting you if you’re doing something like talking on the phone. A few users have reported issues here and there but nothing too serious.

WiFi Baby Monitor

Last and certainly not least is WiFi Baby Monitor. This is a newer application and it hasn’t been all that popular yet, although our testing and initial user reactions are positive. This one transmits noise directly to your device and turns your devices into an actual baby monitor instead of using a phone call or Skype call. It’ll also alarm you when the battery is low on the monitoring device and it will alert you if the connection drops. If you get the paid version, you can unlock the ability to talk back to your baby. You’ll also get end-to-end encryption, ad-free, and you can control the camera of the monitoring device from your smartphone.
