Adding more noise to the rumors that Apple will abandon the 3.5mm headphone jack on this year’s iPhone, a new report claims once again that the company will do so in an effort to make the phone thinner and lighter. According to sources for Fast Company, Apple is working on a new audio system for the upcoming phone as part of an audio system revamp.

Our source adds that the audio system will also leverage a new noise-canceling technology from Wolfson Microelectronics—a U.K.-based audio tech company Cirrus acquired in 2014. The software will be baked into the phone and also into the headphones that will plug into it, and will help remove background noise in music playback and in phone calls, our source says.

Rumors have been circulating for a little while now that the upcoming iPhone 7 will lose the 3.5mm headphone port, with some sort of adapter being required if users wanted to listen to music with their existing headphones. As to why they’d do it, there could be a number of reasons, including making the phone lighter and thinner, or even improving the audio quality.

Interestingly, this would not be the first time Apple shipped an iPhone that was incompatible with most headphones out of the box. The original iPhone utilized a recessed headphone jack that required an adapter for most people to use.
