Late last month, a new Xiaomi device passed through China’s TENAA which led many to believe that a new Redmi 3 smartphone, not to be confused with the Redmi Note 3, would soon be arriving. Today, Xiaomi has not only confirmed the existence of the handset, but has also teased a launch date for January 12th.
The teaser was posted to the company’s official Weibo account and gives us a brief look at the back of the smartphone. The camera positioning matches up perfectly with last month’s TENAA images and there also now appears to be a plaid pattern design on the back.
Xiaomi has also revealed that the smartphone will feature a 5-inch display and an all metal body, but hasn’t mentioned any additional specifications yet. We do have the TENAA details to go on though, which listed a 1280 x 720 resolution display, unspecified 1.5GHz octa-core processor, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of internal memory, Android 5.1.1 Lollipop and a 13 megapixel rear, 5 megapixel front camera combination.

The old Redmi 2 cost just $110 when it first launched, so here’s hoping that Xiaomi will target a similar price point with the Redmi 3. Pencil January 12th into your calendars.
