A popular gadget blogger proclaimed last week that “phone design has plateaued,” that we have “reached peak smartphone” and that smartphones are pretty much as good as they’re going to get. She has a point.

And yet move forward we must. Smartphone users crave new features, and I believe that’s why innovation is moving out of the smartphone and into smartphone cases.

No, I’m not talking about mere customization, like Google’s new $35 Live Case, which lets you customize your Nexus case with personal photos and gives you a “Shortcut button” that you can assign to any number of actions on the phone.
