Last week Alcatel (formerly Alcatel OneTouch) formally announced the Idol 4 and 4S, with the former designed to take the place of the current Idol 3 family and the latter representing a slightly more upscale high-mid-range experience. With the next-gen Idol family on its way, it was only a matter of time before the Idol 3 ended up on the discount rack.

Right on schedule, Amazon is now offering a pretty generous price cut of about $100 over the original pricing for the Idol 3, bringing the price of the phone to just $180. That’s not bad at all considering this is a fully unlocked model and only $50 more than the ‘locked’ version sold by Cricket Wireless.

So what kind of hardware are you getting for $180? The Idol 3 is powered by a Snapdragon 615 with 2GB RAM, with other specs including a 5.5-inch 1080p display, 16GB storage, microSD, a 13MP rear cam, 8MP front cam, and a 2910 mAh battery. There’s also Android 5.1 Lollipop right out of the box. While the Idol 3 might be a bit less impressive than the Idol 4, and significantly less impressive than the 4S, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better phone for sub-$200.

What do you think, worth picking up the Idol 3 at a discount, or better to wait it out for the Idol 4 — even if it’s likely to be priced at least $100+ more? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
